Andorra in practice: access, seasons, tax, healthcare
The Principality of Andorra is a 468 km² microstate in the Pyrenees, between France and Spain. It belongs to neither the European Union nor the Schengen Area, but uses the euro and can only be reached by road, from Ariège on the French side or Catalonia on the Spanish side. Allow around two and a half hours from Toulouse-Blagnac airport and around three hours from Barcelona-El Prat, the two gateways we use for all our transfers.
The country rises from 840 metres at the Riu Runer to 2,942 metres at Coma Pedrosa. That range explains most of what it offers: three ski areas, linked or complementary, in winter; a dense network of trails, lakes and refuges in summer; and a dry, sunny mountain climate that supports recovery after surgery.
The seven parishes

Tax and shopping
Andorra's IGI, the local equivalent of VAT, is set at 4.5% — the lowest rate in Europe. That is what makes shopping in Andorra an activity in its own right, on electronics, perfume, spirits and sports gear. Customs allowances on the way back into France or Spain are set out in our dedicated guide.
Healthcare in Andorra
Andorra's health system rests on the CASS and on a private network that is dense for a country this size. What people ask us most
Do I need a visa to travel to Andorra?
Andorra is not part of the Schengen Area and has no border control of its own, but it can only be reached through France or Spain. If you need a Schengen visa to enter either of those countries — as nationals of most Gulf states do — then you need one, and it must be multiple-entry so you can leave again. We help you put the file together.
How do I get to Andorra from France?
There is no airport in Andorra. From France the route runs via Toulouse-Blagnac, then the RN20 and the Pas de la Case, around two and a half hours by road. From Spain, Barcelona-El Prat then the C-16, around three hours. We arrange transfers by shuttle or private driver in both cases.
When is the best time to come?
December to March for skiing, with the most reliable snow generally in January and February. June to September for hiking, trail running and the high-altitude lakes. May, October and November are the quietest and cheapest months: those are the ones we recommend for a convalescence stay or a health check-up.
Is shopping in Andorra really cheaper?
In some categories, yes. IGI is 4.5% against 20% VAT in France and 21% in Spain, which shows most on electronics, perfume, alcohol, tobacco and sports equipment. On everyday food and clothing the gap is small. Watch the customs allowances on the way back, which are enforced.
Can treatment received in Andorra be reimbursed?
As Andorra is not in the European Union, the European Health Insurance Card is not valid there and the S2 form does not apply as it would in a member state. Cover may still be possible in some cases through your private health insurance or with prior agreement from your national scheme. We point you in the right direction, but we never promise reimbursement.
What is a supervised convalescence stay?
You have surgery in your own country, then recover in Andorra: accommodation selected for accessibility and quiet, physiotherapy on site, medical follow-up, and a return trip arranged when your surgeon agrees. It is a recovery stay, not surgical care.
How long does it take to obtain Andorran residency?
Allow around fourteen weeks on average for a passive residency put together alone, and in the region of eight weeks with a file properly prepared from the outset. Timings depend on how complete the file is, on proof of accommodation and on filing with the AFA. Legal advice is delivered by our accredited partner firm in Andorra.
Do you work with clients from the Gulf?
Yes, mainly on long summer family stays: villa or suite, driver, staff, activities for the children, and health check-ups as an option. Support is provided in French, English, Spanish and Catalan, and we prepare the Schengen visa file in advance.
How does Vallcura Connect get paid?
In two ways, and we always tell you which one applies to your case. Either the partner pays us an introduction commission, and the price you pay is their published rate. Or we charge you coordination fees, clearly stated before we begin, when the project calls for substantial follow-up. Never both on the same service.
Is it more expensive to go through you?
No. We add no margin to our partners' rates. In most cases you pay the same price as going to them directly — sometimes less, where we have negotiated terms for our clients. What you save is the time spent searching, comparing and checking.
How do you choose your partners?
We verify accreditations and licences, we meet the professional on site, we check working languages, rates and response times. Then we track the feedback from every client. A partner who disappoints leaves the network. You remain free to turn down a proposed partner and ask for another.
What happens if things go wrong with a partner?
You call us. We step in directly with the professional, and if the problem persists we redirect you to another partner in the network at no extra cost. That is precisely what separates a genuine introduction from a directory listing.
